Strasbourg is France's largest city, after Paris. It lies in the northeast of the country on the Franco-German border, which is defined by the River Rhine. The German town of Kehl is directly across the river from Strasbourg and is accessible by a recently built pedestrian bridge. Strasbourg is home to almost 300,000 people and hosts several universities, however, it is most famous as the seat of the European Parliament and a number of European-based organisations, such as the European Court of Human Rights. Throughout history, possession of the city was contested numerous times between Germany and France, a consequence of which is the blending of two cultures and an assimilation of architectural styles. The cuisine, too, blends traditional German staples such as sauerkraut with northern French gastronomy, such as hearty meat and vegetable stews. Strasbourg has a continental climate, which provides warm summers and cold, overcast winters, with frequent rain and occasional snow.
