Tyne and Wear, covering 208 square miles, is a county in the northeast of England. It comprises five Metropolitan Boroughs, namely North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead, Sunderland and Newcastle. The county has just over a million residents and is a relatively new county, coming into being in 1974 when the Local Government Act of 1972 was implemented. The county is home to two very important rivers, the Tyne and the Wear, as well as the major road networks of the A1M, which connects the county to the south and to Scotland. On a historical note, the county is also the ideal spot to wonder at the remains of Hadrian's Wall and the medieval, 11th-century Alnwick Castle.
